General elections in Myanmar on 8 November 2015 mark a historic milestone on the country's road to democracy. For the first time in decades, elections were contested by all major political parties in an overall calm, peaceful and organised way across the country. The impressive turnout on the election day bears testimony to the commitment of Myanmar's voters to the continued democratisation of the country. In the post-elections period, it will be critical for all sides to accept the results in a spirit of national unity and reconciliation.
The European Union's Election Observation Mission, led by Vice-President of the European Parliament Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, represents the largest international observation mission monitoring the elections. It will remain in country until the election process is completed. The Mission will present its preliminary statement and findings tomorrow.
As a close partner and friend, the European Union is ready to further support Myanmar in its ongoing political transition to democracy, peace, stability and economic development.
