EU-Japan trade deal: conclude soon, aim high, open cars market, say MEPs in Japan

The commitment to a swift conclusion of an ambitious, comprehensive and balanced free trade deal with Japan, to the benefit of citizens and economies on both sides, was stressed by EP trade MEPs in their delegation visit in Japan, concluded on Friday. The delegation, led by EP’s Trade committee chair Bernd Lange (S&D, DE), also urged to resolve the outstanding issues in EU-Japan trade talks, and asked to achieve a deal more ambitious than the recently concluded Trans-Pacific Partnership deal.

Mr Lange congratulated the Japanese government on the conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal (TPP) but said that the EU-Japan trade deal in “certain areas should strive to go even further”. The delegation encouraged Japan to pursue “more ambitious outcome in the EU-Japan FTA/EPA on some issues”.
