European Parliament's International Trade Committee to visit Japan

An eight-member delegation of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee (INTA) will visit Tokyo from 4 to 6 November. The group will be headed by INTA Chairman Berndt Lange, accompanied by Petr Jezek, chair of the EP's Delegation for relations with Japan.

During their visit, the delegation will be meeting with members of the Diet, senior Japanese government officials, Japanese and European businesses representatives and members of trade unions and environmental organisations.

At their latest bilateral summit in Tokyo in May, the leaders of the European Union and Japan called on their negotiators 'to settle the outstanding differences' in ongoing talks toward a bilateral free trade agreement with a view to reaching agreement on all key issues preferably by the end of this year. The EP supports the negotiations, whilst saying in its resolution that there are also concerns that need to be addressed. If a deal should be reached, it will ultimately need the EP's approval.
