EU diplomats to reach out to 24,000 Japanese high school students

Forty-one European Union diplomats, including 11 ambassadors, will be visiting 54 senior high schools across Japan next month to talk about the EU and their respective countries. Between 9 to 13 November, nearly 24,000 students in 26 prefectures from Hokkaido to Kyushu will take part in this year's “The EU Comes to Your School” project.

The project, organised by the Delegation of the EU to Japan with the cooperation of the embassies of the EU Member States in Japan, underscores the importance the EU places on people-to-people exchanges, particularly interaction with the youth of today, who will become the opinion-makers of tomorrow, as a way of sowing the seeds for deeper bilateral relations. Of the 54 schools taking part in this year’s project, 35 are "Super Global High Schools"[1] designated by the Japanese government, which aim to foster the global leaders of the future to play active roles on the international stage.

The annual project is a unique opportunity to help young people increase their knowledge of the world, of how the EU cam about and the role it plays today, and of the rich and diverse history and cultures of the EU’s Member States. Since its launch in 2007, EU diplomats have visited nearly 800 schools and given lectures to some 340,000 Japanese students.
