It was with deep sadness that I have shared this morning with all EU Foreign Ministers in Riga the news of a terrorist attack in Bamako that has claimed the lives of several people, including a security officer of Belgian nationality working for the EU Delegation in Mali.

My deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of all the innocent victims of this terrible attack, and a special thought goes to those of our colleague. We will work with the Malian authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

This act only reinforces the importance of concluding a peace agreement in Mali so that law, order and security can be ensured throughout the country. The EU gives its full support to those efforts through all the means at our disposal. This terrorist act strengthens even more our resolve to help fight terrorism throughout the region. It is important that all communities in Mali, local and foreign, can live in peace and security.

The EU is committed to support the people of Mali at this difficult time.
