On behalf of the European Union, I congratulate Mr Shinzō Abe on his re-election as the Prime Minister of Japan.

I am confident that that the large support that he and his government obtained yesterday from the Japanese people will give him additional energy to pursue the ambitious reform agenda to the benefit of Japan and the world.

Likewise, I am looking forward to further developing the strategic partnership between Japan and the European Union during my mandate.
