Viorel Isticioaia-Budura, ambassador-designate of the European Union (EU) to Japan, has arrived in Tokyo and today presented a copy of his credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A Romanian national, he has served in many diplomatic posts for his country before becoming Managing Director, Head of Asia and the Pacific Department, in the EU's European External Action Service (its diplomatic service) in 2011. Japan is familiar terrain for him, after his posting as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Romania from April 1992 to August 1996.
A lover of Japanese traditional arts and fluent in English, Chinese and French in addition to his mother tongue, Ambassador-designate Isticioaia-Budura assumes the helm of the EU Delegation to Japan at an important time in EU-Japan relations, with both sides active in parallel negotiations toward a strategic partnership agreement and an ambitious and comprehensive free trade agreement.
