EEAS Managing Director Viorel Isticioaia-Budura appointed new EU ambassador to Japan

Mr Viorel Isticioaia-Budura, the current managing director for Asia and the Pacific in the European External Action Service, has been appointed the European Union's new ambassador to Japan, assuming the post of head of the Delegation of the EU to Japan.

With decades of experience in Asian affairs, he has previously served as Romania's ambassador to China, as well as minister-counsellor at the Embassy of Romania in Japan.

Mr Isticioaia-Budura will replace outgoing EU Ambassador to Japan Hans Dietmar Schweisgut. Mr Schweisgut, who has been serving in Japan since January 2011, will become the next EU ambassador to China.
