EU network in Japan expanded with Hokkaido EU Association

EU News 295/2014

2014/07/08

The Delegation of the European Union to Japan’s regional network has been enhanced today with the formal establishment of the Hokkaido EU Association. This brings the total number of such entities in Japan to 14. An agreement was signed, marking this launch.

Since the establishment of the first EU Association in Oita in 1987, these organisations have been instrumental in disseminating information about the EU to Japan's regions and helping foster bonds between the EU and Japan. The EU Associations organise seminars and conferences as well as cultural events, and arrange for study trips to and from Europe.

Maeve Collins, Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the EU Delegation, who took part in today's inaugural meeting in Sapporo, welcomed this latest opportunity to promote bilateral exchanges in the prefecture and expressed confidence that the Hokkaido EU Association will do an excellent job to this end.

The Hokkaido EU Association was born through the active efforts of the Hokuyo Bank and the Hokkaido Research Institute for the Twenty-first Century.
