EU News 239/2014

23 May 2014

Following on from two successful events held in 2012 and 2013, the third European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) ran at Meiji University in Tokyo on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th May and at Doshisha University in Kyoto on Sunday 18th May. The event showcased to Japanese students, researchers, as well as to those already in employment looking to bolster their career through the acquisition of additional qualifications, some of the most interesting higher education programmes Europe has to offer.

The event was a major success with a total of 2100 students visiting over the three days of the fair. A significant increase on the 1900 students that visited the 2013 event. In all nearly 60 European universities from 14 EU member states took part in the EHEF to discuss opportunities for studying abroad directly with students. Individual presentations by institutions were also held and greatly appreciated by the students.

On the evening of the 15th May a networking reception for European and Japanese universities was held, with opening remarks by Ambassador of the EU to Japan, Mr. Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, Vice President of Meiji University, Professor Etsuko Katsu, and Director-General of the Higher Education Bureau at MEXT, Mr. Daisuke Yoshida.

On the 16th May a lively presentation was given by French mathematician, Mr. Cédric Villani, recipient of the Field Medal in Mathematics in 2010, and on the 18th May the Doshisha University event was visited for the second year in a row by the Mayor of Kyoto City, Mr. Daisaku Kadokawa.
