Statement on the adoption of the Memorandum of Peace and Concord by the Parliament of Ukraine

EU News 233/2014

Brussels, 21 May 2014

"We very much welcome the adoption of the Memorandum of Peace and Concord by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. This Memorandum, supported by a bi-partisan majority, offers a good platform for concrete steps towards de-escalation of the situation, in particular by facilitating Ukrainian-led solutions adopted in unity. It will also facilitate the adoption of important reforms in the coming months, including decentralisation and comprehensive constitutional reform.

We welcome the inclusive process, notably the round tables held in the recent days, which led to this agreement on issues of crucial importance to all Ukrainians, and we look forward to the continuation of the national dialogue. This is particularly significant in the run-up to Sunday's Presidential elections. We stand ready to provide support for the implementation of the Memorandum. We hope that all international partners, in particular those party to the Geneva 17 April Agreement will also contribute to its implementation."
