Statement by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the appointment of Jens Stoltenberg as the next NATO Secretary General

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

“It is with great pleasure that I learned of the appointment of Jens Stoltenberg as successor to Anders Fogh Rasmussen as NATO Secretary General as of 1 October. I send him my congratulations and my best wishes for a successful tenure in this important position.

Jens Stoltenberg is ideally placed to lead NATO at a crucial and challenging time, and to steer the Alliance into a successful future. The EU stands ready to further develop the existing strong cooperation with NATO in a spirit of partnership and based on our shared values. I am very much looking forward to working with the new Secretary General.”
