David O’Sullivan, chief operating officer of the European External Action Service, arrived in Tokyo for a two-day visit on 27 March for a series of meetings with Japanese counterparts, including Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Shinsuke Sugiyama. High on his agenda are a stock-taking of the progress made so far regarding the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Japan, as well as consultations on regional issues. He will also be looking to prepare the ground for the next EU-Japan Summit later this year, which will build on the success of the previous Summit held in Tokyo last November. He will give a speech at the Japan Institute of International Affairs on the afternoon of 27 March.
