19 March 2014

Mr Christian Berger, director for North Africa, Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Iraq at the European External Action Service, was in Japan to co-chair the "EU-Japan Informal Policy Dialogue on Middle East, North Africa and Gulf issues" on 18 March 2014. Mr Berger and his Japanese counterparts discussed a wide range of issues of common interest, including the Middle East peace process, Syria, Egypt, Iran, and Iraq as well as recent developments in Maghreb and Gulf countries. Mr Berger commented on the EU's role in the Middle East and Northern Africa where the EU is a major political and economic partner: "We see opportunities for working further with Japan, including at multilateral level, and our discussions confirmed that EU and Japan share similar views and interests in promoting peace, democracy and development in this region". Focusing on the Middle East Peace Process, Mr Berger welcomed continued Japanese support for the Palestinian Authority.
