Science and Technology Joint New Year's Reception

The European Union and the S&T Diplomatic Circle organised for the second time a Joint New Year's Reception at the Tokyo Delegation. Practically all institutions relevant for STI from the Japanese government, academia and research were present. Among ca. 140 guests there were also representatives of Japanese and European companies conducting R&D and S&T counsellors from embassies based in Tokyo.

The President of the Science Council of Japan, Professor Takashi Onishi, focused his speech, on the challenges of globalisation for S&T and Japanese ways to overcome a dichotomy of basic and applied research. Two new STI programmes will be launched in Japan: SIP, the Cross-Ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program and IMPACT, the Impulsing Paradigm Change through Disruptive Technologies to promote high risk/high return research development. Mr. Toshiyuki Takei, Director-General for International and Technology Policy Coordination, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and a Mr. Sotaro Ito, Senior Deputy DG, Science and Technology Policy Bureau of MEXT, both underlined benefits of collaboration under Horizon2020.
