The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:
"I condemn the bomb attacks in Egypt over the past 24 hours, which have killed and injured a large number of people. I extend my sympathy to the families of the victims.
Tomorrow, 25 January, Egypt will mark the third anniversary of the popular revolution where the Egyptian people stood up against a repressive regime, to call for dignity, social justice, pluralism, security, democracy, human rights, and a better economy.
In trying to achieve these goals, Egyptians have faced many set-backs. The road towards democracy will no doubt remain difficult, but violence will not bring Egypt any closer to the people's desire for a democratic country where all Egyptians enjoy respect and fundamental human rights.
All the people of Egypt must now stand together and, in a spirit of compromise, build a deep and sustainable democracy."
