Statement by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton condemning the attack on the Christian community in Peshawar, Pakistan

EU News 408/2013

Brussels, 23 September 2013
A 474/13

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission issued the following statement today:

"I am appalled by the terrorist attack on the All Saints Church in Peshawar yesterday, which killed at least 82 people and injured more than 120. The EU condemns this attack in the strongest terms.

We call on the Government of Pakistan to take stronger action to ensure the protection of all its citizens – regardless of their religion or belief - and to bring to justice all groups and individuals responsible for inciting and carrying out acts of terror. Accountability is vital to deter perpetrators. We encourage all Pakistanis to work together to promote and ensure tolerance and mutual understanding.

The EU offers its condolences to the bereaved families."
