EU-Japan relations: Panel discussion to delve into the current challenges and future potential in trade and industrial cooperation

The Delegation of the European Union to Japan and the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation will jointly organise a panel discussion that will look at the future of the strategic partnership between the EU and Japan based on the history of relations between these two major economies.
Earlier this year, the EU and Japan launched parallel negotiations toward a strategic partnership agreement and a free trade agreement. Both sides believe that successful talks would bring bilateral relations to a higher level, one that is closer to their potential.
Given the increasing closeness between the EU and Japan, these developments may seem natural. However, the current landscape is the result of more than three decades of gradual approach between the two actors that moved from trade frictions to dialogue, cooperation and even economic integration (going beyond trade).
The panel discussion, which comes on the heels of the publication of a book titled 'EU-Japan Relations, 1970-2012: From Confrontation to Global Partnership' (Routledge, 2013), will provide an opportunity to listen to one of the principal authors, Joern Keck, a former ambassador of the European Commission to Japan, together with other senior European and Japanese businesspeople, presenting their views on the lessons learned from the past and the implications they have for future cooperation and trade and investment between the two partners.
The panel discussion will be preceded by a presentation on the book by Professor Franz Waldenberger of Munich University and the University of Tsukuba.
