Celebration of the delivery of the first component from EU and start of assembly of the JT-60SA tokamak

On 25 March 2013 the EU Delegation in Japan, Tom Kuczynski, delivered an inauguration speech at the ITER Broader Approach celebrating the delivery of the first element from Europe, the huge cryostat base from Spain (CIEMAT) at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency's (JAEA) Naka Fusion Institute in Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan for the superconducting fusion experimental device at this institute. This collaboration between EU and Japan is executed under the ITER Broader Approach Agreement signed between Euratom and Japan and entered into force in 2007. The JT-60SA is roughly 1/4 size of main ITER device and it is supposed to go online in 2019 (before ITER). Within the Broader Approach, this project at Naka is advancing aspects of the recently published Fusion Roadmap. The ITER research community in Europe is excited about this additional future exploitation possibility of JT60SA in Japan.

Attendees included: Members of the Japanese Diet, Japanese senior vice Minister of Science, President of JAEA, local authorities, representatives of the  European Voluntary Contributors to the Broader Approach Activities from Spain, France and Italy, Related manufacturers in Japan, EU Delegation and embassies of the MS, etc.
