Chief negotiators from the European Union and Japan held in Tokyo today the first round of negotiations on an EU-Japan Framework Agreement.
The EU side was led by Ambassador Viorel Isticioaia-Budura. The Japanese side was led by Jun Yamada, deputy-director general of the European Bureau of the Japanese Foreign Ministry. The two sides agreed to hold a second round of negotiations in Brussels before summer.
The talks followed the 25 March agreement between European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to launch parallel bilateral negotiations on a binding agreement on political, global and sectoral cooperation and a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement.
