President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy congratulates Giorgio Napolitano on his second mandate as President of the Republic of Italy.

"It is my pleasure to congratulate Giorgio Napolitano for his historic second election as President of the Republic of Italy. On behalf of the European Union and personally I wish him every success in his work and look forward to continue cooperating with him in these challenging times for Italy and the European Union.

I would also like to express to President Napolitano my deep and sincere appreciation for his sense of duty and of the general interest, for his tireless efforts to ensure the political stability in Italy and his political vision to promote the European cause."
