The President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, and the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, made today the following statement:

"It is with regret that we have decided to postpone next week's EU-Japan Summit.

The on-going efforts to find a solution for the financial situation of Cyprus require our presence in Brussels. We reiterate the importance of EU-Japan strategic relations and would like to thank Prime Minister Abe for expressing his understanding.

We look forward to the rescheduling of the summit at the earliest possible opportunity. As planned, Commissioner De Gucht will be in Tokyo on Monday."
