EU Delegation to host seminar to salute the contributions of working women

The Delegation of the European Union to Japan, together with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, will organise a half-day seminar on the occasion of International Women's Day⁽¹⁾ on 8 March to bring together some of the trailblazers for working women in Japan in an effort to highlight the issue of gender equality.

Equality between women and men is one of the European Union's founding values. The principle of equal pay for work of equal value is enshrined in the 1957 Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community. Over the last decades, Europe has made great strides in removing inequalities, largely through legislation, integrating gender into other policy areas and implementing specific measures for the advancement of women. Most recently, the European Commission called for new legislation that would set a 40% objective for members of the under-represented sex in non-executive board member positions at companies listed on stock exchanges in EU Member States.

The EU is committed to promoting gender equality and the advancement of women worldwide, and this upcoming seminar, titled 'Winners at Work: strategies for success from Leading Women in Japan', is a golden opportunity to hear the first-hand experiences of some of the women who have carved out interesting careers in Japan.

In addition to keynote speeches by Masako Mori, Cabinet Minister in charge of gender equality, and Marcel Wiggers, Chairman and CEO of Randstad Japan, Inc., the seminar will also feature a panel discussion moderated by Keio University Graduate School Professor Yoko Ishikura. Former Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi, British Telecom Japan President Haruno Yoshida and Twhy Twhy Inc. President Takako Endo will be among the panellists.

⁽¹⁾ International Women's Day has been celebrated since 1911, and in 1977 the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim 8 March as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace.
