Video Art Series (Session 3)

 It goes something like this: how media artists use appropriation

 In a world saturated with media, it comes as no surprise that artists have chosen to make media itself the center of their work. By using parody, remakes, critical investigation, they look at cinema, television, popular music in ways that challenge, amuse and reveal new perspectives. This conference will look at works by such artists as Pascal Lievre (France), Celine Trouillet (France), Terry Flaxton (U.K.), Johann Grimonprez (Belgium) as well as discuss media appropriation as a major contemporary art strategy, in the works of majors figures such as Douglas Gordon (Scotland), Steve McQueen (U.K.), Aija Liisa Ahtila (Finland), etc.

About the Video Art Series:

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of what is considered the founding act of video art by Korean artist Nam June Paik: an installation consisting of thirteen television sets created in the city of Wuppertal, Germany, in 1963.

European artists have played a key role in the development of this new art practice which can now be found in almost every museum, gallery and international art fair. European countries have also enthusiastically welcomed major artists coming from around the world to create specific works across the continent. Over the course of a programme consisting of six 60-minute screenings selected by Stephen Sarrazin, Europa House, the Delegation of the European Union to Japan's recently established premises in Tokyo's Minami Azabu district, will be the point of departure for a journey through four decades of works by European artists as well as by visiting artists from other parts of the world.

Themes ranging from travel and exploration to fiction and documentary and the performing arts will bring together videos by pioneers of the medium as well as new and emerging talented creators.
