European Parliament Delegation to visit Japan

EU News 57/2013

7 February 2013

Thirteen Members of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Japan will visit Tokyo from 12 to 15 February to take part in the 34th European Union-Japan Interparliamentary Meeting. The group will be led by Hans van Baalen, a Dutch Liberal.

The parliamentarians will meet with House of Representatives Speaker Bunmei Ibuki and House of Councillors President Kenji Hirata. They will then meet their Japanese counterparts in the one-day parliamentary meeting on 13 February, which will cover such topics as the political situation in the EU and Japan, as well as common challenges including the strengthening of bilateral relations through such means as a political framework agreement and a free trade agreement. They will also discuss the economy, energy security and social issues.

During their stay, the EP members will also visit Miyagi Prefecture to see the ongoing reconstruction efforts after the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

Members of the media who are interested in attending the parliamentary meeting but do not have press badges issued by the Diet are asked to contact the Delegation of the EU to Japan for details regarding access to the venue.
