Statement by the spokesperson of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, following the meeting with the Foreign Minister of Myanmar, U Wunna Maung Lwin

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"The High Representative met today the Foreign Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, U Wunna Maung Lwin. The High Representative commended the historic changes in the country and referred to the challenges ahead in terms of democratisation, economic development, the situation of human rights, and peace and national reconciliation.

The two sides discussed ways to strengthen economic cooperation notably through the organization of a Myanmar-EU Task Force, further normalise relations and render the EU's support to the reforms under way more effective. The High Representative reiterated the invitation for President U Thein Sein to visit Brussels soon."
