Statement by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the confirmation of John Kerry as the next US Secretary of State

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission issued the following statement today:

"I am delighted that Senator John Kerry has been confirmed to succeed Hillary Clinton as US Secretary of State. I have already had the privilege of meeting him a number of times and look forward very much to seeing him very soon to discuss how we can continue the excellent EU-US cooperation on foreign policy.

John Kerry’s huge experience and impressive track record, most recently as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, gives him the ideal profile for this key post.

I am looking forward very much to working with him.”
