European Council

I learned with great satisfaction that today the General Assembly has endorsed you, a European, as the next Secretary General of the United Nations.

I wish to reiterate once again that the European Union, as a staunch supporter of effective multilateralism in international affairs, will do its utmost to support you in your new capacity. For us, the United Nations is and will remain a core institution in the multilateral system based on the values and principles that we defend, on the respect of international law, democracy , human rights and peace.

I look forward to working closely with you on a number of global issues , in particular on promoting global responsibility and burden sharing in the context of the recent unprecedented waves of migration and refugees; on terrorism ; climate change as well as on peace and security.
