Brussels, 29/06/2016

The High Representative/Vice-President, Federica Mogherini, spoke this morning with the Foreign Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida to discuss the outcome of the UK referendum, the EU Global Strategy and EU-Japan bilateral relations.

The High Representative discussed with the Minister the next steps following the outcome of the UK referendum, stressing that for now, the United Kingdom remains a full member of the European Union, with all the rights and obligations that derive from this, including in the fields of foreign and security policy. The High Representative expressed her belief that the EU and the UK would continue to work as closely together as possible in the future.

The HR/VP thanked her counterpart for his personal contribution to the EU's Global Strategy, which was welcomed by the EU Heads of State and Government at the European Council meeting yesterday. Minister Kishida and the HR/VP agreed that the world needs a strong and united Europe and that the EU, Japan and like-minded partners must maintain their common work for a rules-based international order.

Finally, the High Representative/Vice-President and the Foreign Minister discussed issues of regional and bilateral importance, including looking ahead to the ASEM Summit in Mongolia, the recent adoption of the EU's Joint Communication on China, and the importance of working towards the swift conclusion of the EU-Japan Strategic Partnership and Free Trade agreements.
