On cessation of hostilities in Syria: Statement by HR/VP Federica Mogherini
EU News 59/2016
Brussels, 23/02/2016
The agreement announced by the US and Russia, as co-chairs of the ceasefire task force established by the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), of which the EU is part, on the terms of a nationwide cessation of hostilities in Syria is good news and a step in the right direction. It is fully in line with the decision taken by the ISSG in Munich last week.
It is now crucial to work on the concrete implementation of modalities. It must apply to all parties currently engaged in military or paramilitary hostilities, other than groups designated as terrorist organisations by the United Nations Security Council, as also emphasized by the European Council on 19th February.
Our duty is now to work with all relevant actors to accept the modalities for cessation of hostilities and to honour the commitments they made in Munich last 11-12th February.
