On the DPRK's announcement of a 'satellite' launch: Statement by the Spokesperson

EU News 39/2016

Brussels, 04/02/2016

The government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has notified several United Nations agencies that it intends to launch a 'satellite' later this month.

Any launch by the DPRK using ballistic missile technology would be in clear violation of several UN Security Council Resolutions. It would be a further provocation in the wake of the illegal nuclear test the DPRK conducted on 6 January and yet another unacceptable threat to international peace and security in the region and beyond.

The DPRK must fully comply with its international obligations. The DPRK will not find any security in these actions, which can only escalate tensions in the region.

We urge the DPRK to engage in a credible and meaningful dialogue with the international community, in particular in the framework of the Six-Party Talks. We are in close contact with our partners and will be closely monitoring developments, including by working with the UN Security Council.
