On the abolition of death penalty in Mongolia: Statement by the Spokesperson

EU News 373/2015

09/12/2015

The vote on 4th December by the Parliament of Mongolia in favour of a new Criminal Code that abolishes the death penalty for all crimes is truly excellent news. Capital punishment is a cruel and inhuman punishment which fails to deter criminal behaviour and which represents a grave denial of human dignity and integrity.

Taking effect from September 2016, this formal legal step follows on from the moratorium on the use of the death penalty that has been applied in Mongolia since January 2010. The EU hopes that other countries in the region will follow Mongolia's example and support the objective of working towards universal abolition of the death penalty.
